America's Forgotten Past-time
Americans loved their past time at the turn of the century. Baseball fans loyally watched the game from wooden-bleacher seats as their favorites played on grass fields.

Russia had a Tsar, World War I had not begun, and Americans worked on farms. Corporations produced widgets, hired labor, and maximized profits without buying into sports. The All-American past-time was for the people and by the people. Nike and Intel did not exist but Ty Cobb did.

When these vintage cards were printed baseball was a game, not a business. Ty Cobb was a Detroit Tiger, not a corporate sponsored player. Rather than lease himself to the market, Cobb played with allegiance to the same team year after year, batting title after batting title.

The now easily-gotten pampered lifestyle was not for these players. Autographs were for the fans, not for the players. Hard-work, perseverance, loyalty, and winning was their game.

Tobacco cards are a call back to an era when baseball was a game not a corporate competition. It was a time in history when the game and winning the game meant more than the endorsements and the glamour associated with that splendor. The players chewed "Red Devil" tobacco, and their uniform bore the name of their teams, not logos like Nike. Players wore watches on their wrists not their necks, and they traveled by rail, not plush charter flights.

In these cards we can relive part of our history.
